Copyright & permissions: using downloaded content responsibly
Insto Reels is a tool — like a browser's "Save As" button. What matters legally is what you do with the file afterwards. This guide explains the basics in plain language. It is not legal advice; when in doubt, ask the creator or a lawyer.
Who owns an Instagram reel?
The person who created it. Posting a reel on Instagram does not make it free to reuse — the creator keeps the copyright, and Instagram only gets a license to display it. Downloading a copy does not transfer any rights to you.
- Saving your own reels as a backup.
- Keeping a copy for personal, offline viewing.
- Downloading content the creator has explicitly marked as free to reuse.
- Using a clip with the creator's written permission.
- Reposting someone else's reel as your own content.
- Using downloaded videos in ads, products or anything commercial.
- Removing credits or watermarks to hide the original creator.
- Downloading from private accounts (our tool doesn't allow this anyway).
What about "fair use"?
Fair use is a narrow legal doctrine (mainly in the US) that can cover things like criticism, commentary, news reporting and education. It is decided case by case — there is no rule like "under 15 seconds is fine" or "giving credit is enough". If your use is commercial or replaces the original, fair use almost certainly does not apply.
How to ask a creator for permission
- Send them a direct message on Instagram or use the business email in their bio.
- Say exactly where and how you want to use the clip.
- Keep a screenshot of their "yes" — verbal or implied permission is hard to prove.
- Credit them in the format they ask for, even when they give permission for free.
Are you a rights holder?
Insto Reels does not host, store or cache any Instagram content — downloads come directly from Instagram's own servers. If you believe your content is being misused, please read our DMCA policy or email dmca@insto-reels.app.
Download for yourself, or get permission first. Never repost or monetize other people's work. When everyone follows that rule, tools like this one stay useful for everybody.
