Reels downloader vs video downloader — which one do you need?
Instagram has three main content types — reels, feed videos and photos — and they behave differently when you save them. The good news: Insto Reels detects the link type automatically. This guide explains the differences so you know what to expect.
| Reels | Feed Videos | Photos | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Link looks like | instagram.com/reel/… | instagram.com/p/… or /tv/… | instagram.com/p/… |
| Typical length | Up to 3 minutes | Up to 60 minutes | — (still image) |
| File you get | MP4 video | MP4 video | JPG image (per carousel slide) |
| Audio | Embedded in MP4 | Embedded in MP4 | — |
| Max quality | Up to 1080p (as uploaded) | Up to 1080p (as uploaded) | Original resolution |
| Private accounts | Not supported | Not supported | Not supported |
Reels
Reels are Instagram's short-form vertical videos. Their links always contain /reel/. Use the Reels Downloader (our homepage) — it resolves the original MP4 with audio included.
Feed videos
Regular video posts (and older IGTV videos) use /p/ or /tv/ links. They can be much longer than reels. Use the Instagram Video Downloader for these.
Photos and carousels
Photo posts also use /p/ links, but contain images instead of video. A carousel can hold up to 20 slides — the Photo Downloader lets you save each slide in original resolution.
Limits that apply to all three
- Only public accounts can be downloaded — this is an Instagram restriction, not ours.
- Quality is whatever the creator uploaded; we never upscale or re-encode.
- Stories disappear after 24 hours — use the Story Downloader while the story is still live.
- Respect copyright — see our Copyright & Permissions Guide.
